The New Year opens with a bounty for lovers of early string music. Fabio Biondi brings his ensemble Europa Galante to the free concert series at the Library of Congress. There will be a healthy dose of Vivaldi, including two of the Venetian composer’s Concerti dell’ Addio, the Farewell Concertos written in the final year of his life. Avoiding monotony, the concert also features music by Galuppi, Reutter, and Holzbauer 8 p.m. Friday. loc.gov

Go back even further in time with a performance by the Smithsonian Consort of Viols, featuring the family of instruments that reigned before the violin and its relatives took over. This program is devoted to the consort music of John Jenkins, an English court composer in the time of Charles I, 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the National Museum of American History. smithsonianassociates.org
