The Boulanger Initiative, formed to promote music composed by women, takes its name from the two French sister composers. The organization will launch its WoCo Fest, a festival devoted to women composers, this weekend at Blind Whino, the art and performance space in Southwest Washington. The first of three days of concerts, lectures, and other programs coincides with International Women’s Day on Friday.

At the end of the festival’s second day, 8 p.m. Saturday, is a concert by the outstanding Aizuri Quartet. In addition to an arrangement of a chant by Hildegard von Bingen and Gabriella Smith’s Carrot Revolution, the concert features relatively new music by Nina C. Young, Caroline Shaw, Sky Macklay, and Katherine Balch.

Violinist Jennifer Koh and composer Missy Mazzoli perform the other marquee concert Friday night. Special day-pass tickets afford entrance to a number of events both days of the festival. boulangerinitiative.org
