Critic’s Choice

Two blockbuster performances are scheduled for next week, both presented by Washington Performing Arts and neither of which should be missed.

First comes the duo concert by pianists Leif Ove Andsnes and Marc-André Hamelin. Either one would be a top draw by himself, and together the fireworks should be technicolor. The centerpiece will be Stravinsky’s own four-hand arrangement of the ballet score for The Rite of Spring. Complementing it will be a selection of more rarely heard works for the combination: Mozart’s Larghetto and Allegro in E-flat, Stravinsky’s Concerto for Two Pianos, and Debussy’s En blanc et noir. All fans of this special kind of music-making should be there 8 p.m. Monday in the Music Center at Strathmore. washingtonperformingarts.org; 202-785-9727.

Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato comes to town the following evening, as part of a touring concert production of Handel’s opera Ariodante. Sopranos Christiane Karg and Joelle Harvey, tenor David Portillo, and baritone Matthew Brook join the cast. Harry Bicket conducts The English Concert 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. kennedy-center.org; 202-467-4600.
